Police said a patrol officer observed Smith on 10th Street and Grand Boulevard at approximately 12:24 a.m. attempting to make a left turn on 12th Street before Smith lost control and struck a light post at the intersection of 12th Street and Grand Boulevard.

Smith appeared confused and mumbled statements the officer didn’t understand, according to the police.

Police said the officer asked Smith if he required medical attention, but Smith declined, telling the officer he didn’t want to be seen by EMS.

An investigation by the officer revealed the vehicle sustained major front end damage and undercarriage damage, and the light pole was on the sidewalk broken and on the ground, police said.

The vehicle was towed to the City Tow Lot, according to the police.

According to the police, Smith was arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was booked on three citations: Operating a motor vehicle with .08 percent or more of alcohol in blood, driving a vehicle in a careless manner by attempting to make a left turn at an intersection and failing to slow down causing the vehicle to run into a light pole, and no insurance.

The Chiefs issued a statement late Tuesday afternoon on the incident.

“We are aware of the situation involving Sean Smith,” the statement read. “Whenever one of our players is involved in an incident like this it is disappointing. We will have no further comment at this time as this is an ongoing legal matter.”

Smith, who signed a three-year, $16.5 million free-agent contract on March 15, 2013, was present for Tuesday’s organized team activities (OTAs) workout.

However, the sixth-year pro did not work with the first-team defense.

Smith originally entered the league in 2009 out of Utah as a second-round pick of the Miami Dolphins where he spent four seasons before signing with the Chiefs. He appeared in 16 regular season games for the Chiefs last season with 15 starts at right cornerback.
